Visitors to Trowbarrow Nature Reserve in Lancashire,
UK, might well be surprised to learn that this was once a productive
limestone quarry. Now officially classed as an Area of Outstanding
Beauty, the site has been awarded a European Restoration Award in the
Crushed Rock category from the European Aggregates Association.
In 1992, Tarmac Quarry Products revoked its plans to
extract minerals from the well-established Trowbarrow Quarry, and
restoration work began. This award has been given in recognition of the
nature conservation and species diversity program that has been
implemented at the site over the last eight years. In 1996, Tarmac
presented the reserve as a gift to the Lancashire City Council.
