Oxford Coal Mining Company

Wetland impoundment provides wildlife habitat as part of Oxford Mining Company’s reclamation plan

The Oxford Mining Company has received the Ohio Coal Reclamation Award-2000. The Greening of the Land Award (over 100 acre category) recognized the company’s reclamation of 139 acres in Muskingum County. A large pit impoundment and two large wetland impoundments were constructed as part of the reclamation plan. These structures will enhance the final land use and be beneficial for many years to come. Part of the land is owned by a private individual and part is public land known as Tri-Valley Wildlife Area managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife. The diverse land ownership created the potential for contradictory reclamation priorities. Oxford Mining worked closely with all landowners to develop a reclamation plan which addressed everyone’s needs. This included development of a year-round and part-year storage areas, heavily vegetated pasture and areas planted with native trees to enhance specific wildlife habitat.
