Copper mining and processing ceased in the late 1930s
at the historic Kennicott Copper Mine and Mill, located near McCarthy,
Alaska, within the Wrangell - St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The
mine was named after the adjacent Kennicott Glacier, whereas the company
name Kennecott was misspelled with an "e" instead of an "i".
Kennecott Minerals Company voluntarily cleaned up residual petroleum
products, asbestos and contaminated soils before donating the site,
together with approximately 3,300 acres of mineral rights, to the
National Park Service in 1998. Kennecott was awarded the 1999 National
Stewardship Award by the Conservation Fund for its reclamation efforts
and donation.
