E.L. Gardner, Inc. was nominated for a national reclamation award for its excellence in land planning, a sensitivity to community needs, and a timely reclamation. This company provided a valuable resource to the local community of Brandywine, Maryland. The project utilized an area of 405 acres in the mining of sand and gravel. In accordance with plans of reclaiming this region, a park was developed for the use and enjoyment of the community.
Sand and gravel were mined using a backhoe and transported by use of a
front-end lifter. The final depth of mining was approximately 30 feet. All
topsoil and overburden were conserved to be later utilized in the restoration
process. The following two photographs depict the manner in which the site was
mined. It allowed for both mining and the task of reclamation to occur at the
same time, and in close proximity.

In order to meet the specific needs of the proposed plan, the site was graded as it was reclaimed. The site was constructed in accordance with specifications for its recreational use and with county standards. Ball fields, a picnic pavilion, and walking trail are some of the park's amenities that the community is now able to use and enjoy.
