| The Cravat Coal Company of Ohio has recently received two Ohio Coal
Reclamation Awards for excellence. The Greening of the Land Award (1-100
acre category) recognized the company’s reclamation of 55 acres in
Belmont County. Approximately 12 acres were affected in the 1950s. The
remainder of the 43 acres were undeveloped and pastureland. Specific
problems in accomplishing reclamation were to eliminate existing
highwall on the 12 acres of affected area and construct an incised pond
for recreation and residental land use. The reclamation project produced
four permanent impoundments with one incised pond. The company will
continue to maintain the adjacent hay crop around the pond. |

The Sally Buffalo Park Mine in Harrison County, Ohio, was presented a
special award for achievement in environmental improvement during
reclamation of mined land. The property was surface mined in the
mid-1950s and was partially reclaimed. Cravat Coal Company was not
required to reclaim existing highwalls or pit impoundments. The mine had
two unreclaimed highwalls with a pit impoundment between them. They were
located within 150 feet of homes and were easily accessible. |
