RECLAMATION SUCCESS

Coal Mac, Inc.

The Coal Mac Mine in Prestonburg, Kentucky, began mining operations in December of 1990 and coal removal was completed in February of 1993. As a result of the company’s conscientious and responsible reclamation, Coal Mac, Inc. was awarded the 1999 Kentucky Commissioner’s Award for Excellence in Reclamation.
Mining of this site was a difficult task from the very beginning because of a number of obstacles that had to be eliminated or accommodated. Prior to mining, the company was faced with the daunting task of removing a large number of dwellings, reconstructing a mile of road simply to access the permit area, and relocating a 20" gas pipeline. Coal Mac would also have to relocate a 16" high-pressure hydrocarbon transmission line as the mining progressed.

Due to the company’s outstanding mining and reclamation efforts the site has been successfully reclaimed to a beneficial post mining land use of fish and wildlife habitat
