Located in Binghamton, New York, Southern Tier Stone
Products won the 2003 New York State Mined Land Reclamation Award for
reclamation of a mine near Chenango Valley State Park. The site had been
orphaned, and there was no viable operator to complete reclamation.
Southern Tier took over the mine in 1996 and subsequently developed a
plan to restore the site.

Vegetation thrives on the reclaimed mine site
|
Snow and ice control sand was removed from the site.
Southern Tier graded to remove remaining stockpiles, established
drainage, and trucked about 8,000 cubic yards of soil to the site for growing
plants. Debris was removed from
Page Brook. Mine workings that had
been visible from the nearby state park were concealed when the company built a
100-foot earthen berm buffer. Vegetation established on the reclaimed mine site reduces
soil erosion, protects water quality, and enhances surrounding wildlife habitat
conditions. This prestigious award reflects Southern Tier Stone Products’
dedication to protecting public health and the environment through efficient
mining and reclamation practices.
