National Stone,
Sand & Gravel Association Environmental Eagle Award
|
Operated by Lafarge North America, the Shalersville Plant in Ohio
was awarded the National Stone Sand and Gravel Association’s 2004
Silver Environmental Eagle Award. The Environmental Eagle Award was
created in 1992 to provide national recognition for aggregate-producing
companies actively contributing to the maintenance of the environment in
and around their operations, as evidenced by a corporate commitment to
the full use of environmental controls and systems.
The Shalersville environmental
restoration and residential development project has created lakes to
collect surface run-off and trap suspended solids to protect water
quality in the Cuyahoga River. Lakeshore value has also been enhanced by
residential development.

Quarry sections are restored as soon as quarrying
operations are completed. Their value is further enhanced by creating
lakes and introducing a variety of tree species. The lakes are designed
and positioned to collect surface run-off to help protect the water
quality of the scenic Cuyahoga River. In addition, 53 hectares of
lakeshore property have been subdivided and sold to private homeowners.
The objective is to implement a quarry restoration program compatible
with local ecology – notably by preserving river water quality and
wildlife habitats – and enhance the value of select lots zoned for
private homebuilding. The Shalersville quarry restoration project keeps
the accent on nature.
The arrangement of wooded areas, private homes and lakes helps the
site blend harmoniously into the landscape. Shalersville Plant has been
presented with numerous other awards by local authorities, and
subsequent renewal of the “Wildlife Habitat” certificate for a
portion of the site, attests to the role played by the rehabilitation
project in preserving local wildlife.
