RECLAMATION SUCCESS

Indian Head Coal Mine

Special Award

The U.S. Department of the Interior presented special awards in 2002 for the three most outstanding examples of coal mine reclamation since the Surface Mining Law was enacted in 1977. The Indian Head Mine in Beulah, North Dakota, was honored with the Special 25th Anniversary Silver Award for Excellence in Surface Coal Mine Reclamation for complete reclamation of the mine site into cropland and native grassland for cattle grazing.

At the Awards Ceremony, Donn Steffen, senior mining engineer, remarked , “Our activities at the Indian Head Mine have been at the forefront of mine reclamation in the western United States since the enactment of the reclamation act.” He added, “Accordingly, the Indian Head Mine has probably received more reclamation awards than any other single coal mine in the nation in the past 25 years.”

All land at the Indian Head Mine was reclaimed for agricultural use. Reclaimed lands have consistently exceeded the required standards for revegetation success.
