RECLAMATION SUCCESS

Cabarrus Quarry

National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association Environmental Eagle Award

Operated by Vulcan Materials Company, the Cabarrus Quarry in North Carolina was awarded the National Stone Sand and Gravel Association’s 2004 Gold Environmental Eagle Award. The Environmental Eagle Award was created in 1992 to provide national recognition for aggregate-producing companies actively contributing to the maintenance of the environment in and around their operations, as evidenced by a corporate commitment to the full use of environmental controls and systems.

The operation has been presented with numerous other awards such as the 2003 Mining Stewardship Award for Outstanding Public Outreach and Environmental Enhancement, 2003 Honorable Mention for Conservationist of the Year from NC Wildlife Federation, NASLR Outreach Award, NSSGA Good Neighbor, NSSGA Showplace, ARTBA Globe Award, and NSSGA Outstanding Achievement.

Among the products the Quarry produces are asphalt aggregate, concrete aggregate, and railroad ballast.  A volunteer wildlife team at Cabarrus Quarry manages over 150 acres of the 312-acre site for wildlife habitat. The most notable project implemented at the quarry is the nest monitoring program for eastern bluebird. Employees monitor eighteen nesting structures that they placed around the site. The wildlife team recently replaced and relocated many of the nest boxes, which resulted in increased nesting activity.

The wildlife team also provides food plots for wildlife by planting iron clay teeth for deer and buckwheat, sorghum, brown top millet and milo for birds. The company also maintains a wildflower garden that attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. The gardens have attracted a variety of butterfly species and have improved the aesthetics of the site. Employees noticed an increase in the number of bees visiting the garden. They plan to monitor the bee population and identify the different species found in the garden.
