Mines Become Recreation Areas


Successful environmental reclamation examples from the sand, gravel and crushed stone industries.  Former quarries and mined pits have been reclaimed and are now offering a wide variety of diverse land uses. The following pictures show recreation areas created from reclaimed quarries.

Quarry reclaimed as county park with recreation center

A reclaimed sand and gravel pit becomes part of a network of parks providing hiking trails, picnic facilities and fishing.

A 16-acre cut stone quarry used for fishing and swimming within a county park in Wisconsin.  The quarry is surrounded by trails and picnic areas.

Professors Lake Park is a 203-acre sand and gravel pit located in Ontario. It is a multiple use development that includes housing, playgrounds, a beach, picnic areas, a recreation center, walking paths, and a 65-acre lake.

 


Before reclamation of a mined-out portion of a quarry in Ohio, soon to become Madison Lakes.

After reclamation, the 200-acre Madison Lakes park was a cooperative and planned approach between the County Parks Department and the mining company.

The Royal Botanical Gardens is a rehabilitated sand and gravel pit in Ontario. The pit has been converted into an expansive display of horticultural plants, rock gardens, and water features.

 


The landscape and rock formations created by the mining process make this lake site attractive.
