The Ridgeway Gold Mine, located 18 miles
northeast of Columbia, South Carolina, is owned by Kennecott
Minerals Company. The mine operated from 1988 to 1999 and
consisted of two open pits, processing facilities and a
tailings impoundment. The Ridgeway site is currently being
reclaimed. Over time, the two mine pits will fill with water,
creating lakes connected by 90 acres of wetlands. The
remaining site is being recontoured and vegetated.
Environmental monitoring of ground water and surface water
will continue for 30 years. |
