The mine was given the award in recognition of its innovative internally
drained rehabilitation method, which was pioneered at the mine. The technique
maximizes the capture of rainfall, limiting off-site impacts, and takes into
account overburden characteristics. This method is more successful than
traditional mine site rehabilitation methods which have limited success in low
rainfall regions, such as Queensland's Bowen Basin where the Oakey Creek Mine is
situated. The Environmental Excellence Award is presented to organizations and
individuals with significant environmental achievements and those which have
helped raise the level of environmental management and science in the Australian
minerals, petroleum and electricity industries
