Newman Limestone Formation

Owned by Mountain Materials, L.L.C., the Carter City Quarry is actively mining and process the Newman Limestone Formation. Overburden and topsoil are being redistributed over mined-out areas and in a head of hollow fill as part of the on-going reclamation plan. The quarry is well maintained and successfully dealing with environmental, safety and community concerns. Mountain Materials has an excellent compliance record at all of their Kentucky mining operations. They have never been cited for any violations of Kenucky's Surface Mining Regulations. The Carter City Quarry was nominated for the 2001 Interstate Mining Compact Commission's reclamation award.
The Carter City Quarry is located in one of the oldest limestone producing regions in Kentucky. It lies in the Appalachian Foothills of Eastern Kentucky. The company developed a strategic plan for the quarry that evaluated all phases of the operation from site development to processing and production. The first phase of the plan involved the design and construction of a new haul road to provide the safe transport of limestone products throughout the quarry. In addition, the entrance to the site and yard areas were paved with asphalt.

The company maintains its road and yard surfaces through frequent grading and watering to control excessive dust. Chemical dust suppressants are mixed with spray water at the processing facility and in the water spray truck. This mixture coats the grains of dust and decreases wind detachment. They also periodically check culverts and drainage ditches to ensure there are no obstructions that could cause washouts.
