RECLAMATION SUCCESS

Belle Ayr Coal Mine

Reclamation at the Belle Ayr coal mine, located in northeast Wyoming, has reclaimed land disturbed by surface coal mining since the early 1970s. Land is reclaimed for the pre-mine use of livestock grazing and wildlife habitat.
Reclamation at Belle Ayr also includes mitigation of historical/archaeological sites such as the Sawyers Rifle Pit site. In 1999, Belle Ayr won Office of Surface Mining’s "Excellence in Surface Coal Mining and Reclamation Award" for the Sawyers site mitigation work involving the local community.
