The Oakey Creek Coal Mine is located in
Queensland, Australia, and is
operated by MIM Holdings Ltd. The company was presented the 1999 Australian
Minerals and Energy Foundation Environmental Excellence Award for its
environmental achievements.
The mine was given the award in recognition of its innovative internally
drained rehabilitation method, which was pioneered at the mine. The technique
maximizes the capture of rainfall, limiting off-site impacts, and takes into
account overburden characteristics. This method is more successful than
traditional mine site rehabilitation methods which have limited success in low
rainfall regions, such as Queensland's Bowen Basin where the Oakey Creek Mine is
situated.
