RECLAMATION SUCCESS

Knicely Strip Coal Mine

Operated by Three-C Mining, Inc., the Knicely Strip Mine is located in Upshur County, West Virginia. This surface mine was started in early 1995 and mined the Redstone and Pittsburgh coal seams. Coal was also extracted using the auger method. Streambeds were constructed on both coal seams to control drainage. Three-C Mining made extraordinary efforts to reclaim this site to restore it to pasture and hay land. Knicely-1a.jpg (33291 bytes)

Reclamation on west side of property

There is no highwall settling and approximate original contour was achieved. The operator made extra effort to blend in highwall elimination with existing surface contours. Excellent vegetation was achieved and some of the ponds will be left for the landowners to use. The Knicely Strip Mine was nominated for the 2001 Interstate Mining Compact Commission's reclamation award.
