Peabody Coal Company received the 2001 Kentucky
Commissioner’s Award from the Department for Surface Mining
Reclamation & Enforcement for the outstanding reclamation work
performed on their Ken Mine surface mining complex located near the
community of Rockport in western Ohio County. The complex has been in
operation for approximately 50 years. The company successfully
established a post mining land use of fish and wildlife habitat and the
site presently supports large populations of deer, turkey, and
waterfowl. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has
worked closely with Peabody on this site and more than a dozen permanent
ponds have been stocked with bass, bluegill and catfish. This is the
first of Peabody’s western Kentucky mine sites to use substantial
amounts of native and western grasses in their seeding mixtures, and the
company has also planted more than 200,000 trees and shrubs throughout
the permit area as a source of food and shelter for wildlife. |
