| Ikerd-Bandy Co., Coal Mine
This facility is a 1,210-acre surface mining
operation located near the community of Ano in Pulaski County, Kentucky.
Ikerd-Bandy Company received the 2001 Kentucky Commissioner’s Award
from the Department for Surface Mining Reclamation & Enforcement for
excellence in reclamation activities. Due to the pre-law mining activity
that existed on this site, the company was presented with many difficult
environmental challenges.

|
Several thousand feet of dangerous highwall existed on the site and acid
mine drainage was causing serious off-site pollution problems in the
wild and scenic Rockcastle River. As a direct result of the company’s
ongoing reclamation activity, these public and environmental hazards
have been properly addressed. The company’s outstanding effort to
create diverse fish and wildlife habitat has been well recognized. To
date, 51 permanent impoundments have been built and stocked with
bluegill, bass, crappie and catfish. These same ponds also serve as
important nesting and stopover sites for geese and waterfowl.
