How Do You Get The Invitation To Talk With A Class?
As a last resort, you can make a cold call to the
school. But try a few other methods first.
- If you have children or grandchildren, use
their teachers and former teachers as a beginning contact.
- If you are not married to a teacher, you
probably have a neighbor or friend who is a teacher. Or maybe one of
your employees is.
- Check out your civic, social, and
recreational partners. School districts are often one of the largest
employers in a community, so teachers should be all around you.
- If you are lucky enough to have a company
public relations or community relations department, call them for
help.
- Contact your industry’s trade association.
It’s their job to make you look good.
The new nationwide curriculum standards
emphasize careers. Your operation involves a number of different jobs
and skills, so your company should be a natural source for qualified
speakers. Do some research, find other employees who want to help the
schools, and offer a group of willing speakers to your local school.
Then call the school principal— their job is to use the resources from
the community.
If you are working with a larger company, spend
the money and offer an Open House, followed by a nice dinner for the
new teachers and administrators. Turnover in school districts can go
above 14% every year. And it’s a great method to make people
unfamiliar with “miners” aware of you and your industry. |

Don’t expect to make an offer this week and be in the classroom next
week. Teachers have far tighter schedules, with less flexibility,
than most people think.
