100,000 of these members of the salmon family find this mine water perfect for hatching
and growing. |
Fish hatchery on reclaimed coal mine land |
The coal mine water has dissolved gases extracted and liquid
oxygen added before it is pumped into incubators and trays from the nearby mining complex.
Its chilly temperature ñ about 57 degrees ñ is the perfect environment for arctic char.
The fish hatchery was built on reclaimed land thanks to a partnership between Arch Coal,
Inc. and Mingo County Redevelopment Authority. |
