Arctic Char Fish Hatchery

Thacker Fork, West Virginia, uses cold, pure water from Arch Coalís Mingo Logan mine for the only arctic char fish hatchery east of the Mississippi. More than 100,000 of these members of the salmon family find this mine water perfect for hatching and growing.

Fish hatchery on reclaimed coal mine land

The coal mine water has dissolved gases extracted and liquid oxygen added before it is pumped into incubators and trays from the nearby mining complex. Its chilly temperature ñ about 57 degrees ñ is the perfect environment for arctic char. The fish hatchery was built on reclaimed land thanks to a partnership between Arch Coal, Inc. and Mingo County Redevelopment Authority.
